In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a misguided immune process has been identified, leading to chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland and tissue destruction by T lymphocytes (autoimmune process). Some potential influencing factors, such as the patient’s genetics, and ecological factors, such as multiple infections with various pathogens, are currently emerging areas of research.
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is considered the most significant ecological factor for autoimmune diseases, particularly for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Ongoing research aims to further elucidate the complex interplay of genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and immune dysregulation in the development and progression of this condition.
